Varicocele Repair

When blood vessels from the testicles fail to drain efficiently, they can become swollen and form what is called a varicocele. It is believed that the swollen veins of a varicocele can increase the temperature of the scrotum and lead to a decrease in sperm production, thus affecting male infertility.

Surgical repair of the varicocele veins involves making a small incision in the groin area. Using a microscope, your surgeon will locate the vein leading to the varicocele and cut off the blood flow. The incision will be closed with a few small sutures. After the procedure it is recommended that you allow 48 hours for recovery as you may feel groggy and the area may be tender. You must wait at least 1 week before resuming sexual activity. It is recommended that you schedule a post-operative appointment 1-2 weeks after the procedure.

You can expect to see results approximately 3 months after the procedure since it takes about 72 days for new sperm to develop. At that time, a semen analysis should be scheduled.
